不過其實這首歌是我看某本書裡面提到的
U2合唱團，愛爾蘭最具代表性的搖滾團體，崛起於80年代初期，直到1987年推出四海交讚的專輯「約書亞樹」( The Joshua tree)，方才成為世界性的樂團。該專輯並使他們奪得葛萊美獎最佳專輯、最佳團體兩項大獎。
愛爾蘭原為英國殖民地，後來分裂為二，南愛爾蘭主張獨立，北愛爾蘭則投效英國，雙方政治觀點的差異，加上英國軍隊的鎮壓，使得島上戰亂頻仍、爭端不斷。因為這個特殊的背景，愛爾蘭的歌手經常以戰爭、政治、民族情感所構成的複雜情結為主題，音樂中流露的憤怨與無奈顯而易見。這首「With or without you」乍看之下是首情歌，其實表達了U2對祖國愛爾蘭愛恨交織的情緒。
九八年，日本年度最高收視率的推理偶像劇「沉睡森林」，選了這首歌做為插曲，使得這首歌再次風行起來，使該團正巧在當時推出的精選輯，光是日本就售出近一百萬張。
